PROGRAM INFORMATION

Your Street Your Voice (YSYV) and EmpowHER are after school project based learning programs where BIPoC and LGBTQ+ centered youth ages 14-20 get PAID to learn about the built environment and use design as a tool for racial justice. YSYV was created in response to the architecture, engineering, construction, and design (AECD) industry’s significant lack of representation of BIPoC professionals and addressing the career pipeline. EmpowHER was created to center Women/Femme/Trans/NB Youth, in design and community centered work. Both YSYV and EmpowHER are youth led, youth determined, fostering community relationships and advocacy.

Using a design studio format, YSYV and EmpowHER participants are asked: ‘If you could change one thing in your neighborhood through design, what would it be?’ Through collaboration with the AECD industry, and Community, YSYV & EmpowHER empowers students to be agents of change as designers and activists for justice in their own communities.

This fall, our virtual cohorts are focused on CLIMATE JUSTICE as RACIAL JUSTICE, Using ALL WE CAN SAVE, Design as Protest, Trauma Informed Care, Black Space Manifesto and Critical Race Theory as our foundations. Projects are youth determined, and youth developed, focusing on the following:

Climate Justice as Racial Justice in Built Environment

Climate Justice as Racial Justice in Physical INFRASTRUCTURE

Climate Justice as Racial Justice in COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE

Guest Instructors are BIPoC and LGBTQ+ centered individuals or allies who have experience in the AECD (architecture, engineering, construction, and design) industry and are interested in supporting 2-hour virtual cohort sessions during the upcoming fall season.  We are seeking both experts to teach specific sessions and panelists for our Vital Voices public events, which are public events held on the last day of each cohort.  Vital Voices panelists answer questions about their experiences in the industry and comment on student projects.  Guest Instructors must be able to pass a background check as required by the Oregon Department of Education for positions that work directly with youth (Oregon State Department of Education Disqualifying Crimes 342.143).  Training is provided, dates TBD.

SESSION DETAILS

The specific schedule for each Guest Instructor will be worked out with Program Director Jackie Santa Lucia once your interest form has been submitted.  Guest Instructors can sign up for as many cohort sessions or Vital Voices events as they are interested in and available for, and are paid a $150 honorarium for each.  Some guest instructors choose to gift their honorarium back to ELSO, Inc. as a tax-deductable donation, and you will have the option to indicate this below if you so choose.  ELSO is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, tax ID: 83-1208258.

Note that as of September 14th the fall schedule has been pushed back 1 week - fall cohorts will now begin the week of September 28th and final Vital Voices events will be held November 16th and 17th
