Unleash Your Style. Design a Better World.

Do you see the world through the lens of fashion? Are your notebooks filled with sketches? Do you dream of creating a label that reflects your values?

Roots & Threads is a hybrid 6-week design cohort designed for creative youth aged 13–18 who are passionate about fashion and committed to making a positive impact. There will be 1 virtual cohort and 1 in-person cohort weekly. All in person meetings will be held at this address: 7728 NW Nimbus Ave Beaverton, OR 97008

This isn't just about clothes; it's about fashion with purpose. Explore how to use your creativity for:

  • Self-Expression: Discover your unique voice and style.

  • Cultural Pride: Honor your heritage and tell your story through design.

  • Radical Change: Challenge the fast fashion industry and its impact.

  • Creative Identity: Develop your skills and vision as a designer.

This Season: No Future Without Us

This year's theme, "No Future Without Us," empowers you as the visionary and leader of what's next. We'll delve into:

  • Climate Justice: Designing with environmental responsibility at the forefront.

  • Honoring Black Designers: Celebrating their legacy and contributions to fashion.

  • Bold Expression: Creating looks that speak truth and shift culture.

What You'll Learn & Do:

Led by Jocelyn Rice of Black Earth United, Roots & Threads introduces you to the design process, from concept to creation. With a virtual showcase at the end! Through engaging creative labs, you'll explore:

  • Regenerative Design: Creating fashion that benefits the planet.

  • Upcycling: Transforming existing materials into unique designs.

  • Natural Dyeing: Exploring sustainable and beautiful color techniques.

  • Textile Arts & Wearable Art: Hands-on creation and experimentation.

  • Environmental Justice: Understanding the social and environmental impact of fashion.

  • Storytelling through Design: Communicating your ideas and values visually.

  • Streetwear-Inspired Design: Bringing contemporary style to your creations.

Your Showcase: The Virtual Runway & Design Justice Project

By the end of the program, you'll conceptualize and present your original garment designs in a "virtual runway" showcase. Your work will become a vital part of The Design Justice Project, a living archive of youth-led fashion that dares to imagine and design a better future.

The cohort culminates with an open panel discussion where you'll present your projects and engage with community members and leaders.

Invest in Your Future: Receive a $250 Stipend

Upon successful completion of the 6-week cohort, participants will receive a $250 stipend in recognition of their time and creative contributions.
